NORFACE/ CHANSE/ DFG: Enhancing well-being for the future

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) pre-announced that NORFACE – New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Cooperation in Europe – in cooperation with CHANSE – Collaboration of Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe – will open a call for international, collaborative research projects on the topic of „Enhancing well-being for the future“. The theme can be approached from a variety of perspectives and disciplines in the social sciences. It enables and encourages multi-disciplinarity and provides opportunities for pan-European research integrating researchers from different regions of Europe, and for comparisons across various contexts.

The present call proposes to focus the research on the following themes:

  • Crises, challenges and well-being – Research questions related to this theme may include but are not restricted to: Dynamic features of well-being; Modelling well-being over time and developing prediction models; Long-term effects of ongoing crises and challenges on well-being.
  • Environmental challenges and well-being – Research questions related to this theme may include but are not restricted to: Effect of urbanicity on well-being; Effect of workplace and work organization on well-being; Effects of housing, and community structure on well-being; Effect of climate change on well-being.
  • Well-being and mental health – Research questions related to this theme may include but are not restricted to: Uncovering the development of mental health and well-being; investigating the long-term trajectories of well-being and mental health and their interaction beyond adolescence; Building the basis for future population-based and individuum-based interventions.
  • Well-being, economy and politics – Research questions related to this theme may include but are not restricted to: Analysis of economic growth and well-being; Well-being of marginalized groups; Social and political polarization and well-being; Well-being economics in political reality.

Each applicant is strongly encouraged to contact the corresponding National Contact Point to check the eligibility with the respective funding rules, before drafting or submitting an application. In Germany, the DFG is responsible. The call will be officially announced on 26 May 2023. It follows a two-stage application procedure: pre-proposals (stage 1) and full proposals (stage 2). The deadline for submitting pre-proposals (stage 1) will presumably expire on 21 September 2023. A search tool for project partners is available online.
